Choose the Right Shipping Box

  • Return the equipment in the box it was originally shipped in whenever you can. This box is likely to have all the necessary packing material to ensure that the equipment is not damaged during shipping.
  • If you no longer have the box the equipment originally came to you in, find an appropriately sized box for the equipment; you want enough space for packing material to fit and keep the equipment firmly in place, but also be abundant enough to absorb shocks.
  • Consider double boxing; after packing and sealing the first box, select a box that’s 6 inches larger in all dimensions and place the first box in there inside a layer of packing material. This will help ensure that the equipment doesn’t get damaged during shipment.
  • Shipping centers like the UPS Store or FedEx Office can help you select an appropriately sized box for the equipment you want to return.

Pack the Equipment Securely

  • Before you pack the device, make sure it is fully powered off and all cables are unplugged.
  • Wrap the equipment in bubble wrap.
  • Secure any cables, plug adaptors, and other accessories with cable ties and wrap them in bubble wrap as well.
  • Place the device in a padded box and fill any remaining space with additional packing material, like foam inserts, to hold the equipment securely in place.
  • Avoid loose packing materials like packing peanuts since these will be less effective at holding the equipment in place.
  • Please don’t improvise packing materials; things like Styrofoam cups and newspaper may be available in abundance, but improvised packing materials are more prone to failure during shipment.

Check The Box After Packing

  • Once the box is packed, gently shake it to ensure that everything is secure and nothing is sliding around.
  • As long as you don’t feel any sliding, close the box and seal it with tape to prevent moisture from getting into the box during shipment.
